Make Blu-ray/DVD Digital Copies with MakeMKV Alternative

In case the original Blu-ray/DVD disk was damaged, stolen, or lost, I need to make as many digital copies as i want. So I needed a software app that would kick the copy protection to one side and laugh in its face. I found that hero in MakeMKV.

Source From: Rip Blu-ray to MKV with MakeMKV Alternative

MakeMKV is a software app which shreds the copy protection on a disk, provides you with each file it finds, and when you have made your selection, it makes a nice beautiful MKV file, with perfect picture and sound quality. You can then play it with your favourite media player. The software is available for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux.

How to Rip Blu-ray to MKV with MakeMKV?

    1. Download and install MakeMKV. The program is completely free during the beta-testing phase, but that may change anytime, so get the software while you can.

    2. Put a Blu-ray movie into your PC’s Blu-ray drive, and click the Blu-ray button in the middle of the screen.

MakeMKV can rip copies of your Blu-ray movies to MKV file only on your PC and Mac.

    3. MakeMKV will scan the disc to identify the titles to rip.

4.When the software is done, select the location for your movie in the Output Folder menu box, click Make MKV, and wait. Expect an average Blu-ray disc to take at least 30 minutes to rip to your hard drive. It depends.

However, if you rip Blu-Rays with MakeMKV, then there is a limited period where you can do it for free. For me, it was a couple of months which is not too shabby. Then it told me to pay up. It costs about $50. Too expensive. And, the only other con to MakeMKV is that while it takes perhaps 15 minutes to rip a DVD, it takes well over an hour to rip a Blu-Ray. In fact, one Blu-Ray disk I owned took close to 2 hours!

What's more, if you now check the files, you will see that they are taking up a lot of space on your hard-drive. So what I prefer to do is convert them again to MP4, which cuts a 10GB Blu-ray/DVD file down to 2 or 3 GB. For this task, you can turn to the wonderful Brorsoft Blu-ray Ripper to directly convert Blu-ray to MP4 or anyother video formats.

With it, you can convert Blu-ray into virtually any regular video formats like AVI, WMV, MKV, FLV, MP4, MOV, 3GP, VOB, MPG, etc. In addition, it provides hundreds of video presets for portable devices like iPhone, iPad, PSP, Xbox 360, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Kindle Fire HD, Google Nexus, etc. What's more, this Blu-ray ripper allows you to copy Blu-ray whole content or just backup main movie from Blu-ray with its provided copying features.

(Note: Click here for OS X 10.5)

If you not only wanna convert Blu-ray/DVD videos, but also intend to convert HD Videos such as MKV, MP4, MOV, M4V, AVI movies, the all-in-one tool, Brorsoft’s Video Converter Ultimate (or iMedia Converter for Mac) will be your first and best choice.

Step 1. Import your Blu-ray movies

Download and install Brorsoft Blu-ray Ripper. Launch it and click the Load disc button to import the Blu-ray files that you want to convert. Both ISO, IFO and files in DVD Folder can also be loaded.

Step 2 Select compatible video format

Just click on the dropdown menu of "Format", and then choose MKV, H.264 MP4 from Common Video profile list. If you want to keep 1080p resolution as source movie, you can choose HD Video > H.264 HD Video(*.mp4) or MKV HD Video(*.mkv) as output format.

Tip: If the default video/parameters can't meet your needs, just click "Settings" icon to adjust the video codec, bitrate, frame rate, audio sample rate, etc to get a decent video as you want. In principle, the larger input values, the better output quality, but the corresponding larger file size.

    Step 3. Start ripping Blu-ray

When all settings are done, select the location for your movie in the Output Folder menu box, simply click the Start button to begin the conversion.
