You are supposed to store the bag in its box, but leather does have to be aired out often. I have found bags stored for years inside their containers without any unwell result in any way, and I have heard about stored luggage that did create modest issues after some time, commonly although not normally as a result of community local climate, so sadly your mileage may well change.
